Believed to have originated from wild collected material and for a long time considered to be the species R. gardenia - see the article by Lyn Craven, Bringing a Conclusion to Confusion: Rhododendron 'Gardenia Odyssey', for more information.
All hybrids listed with R. gardenia in their parentage are referable to this cultivar, as the true species is of extremely limited distribution in cultivation and not known to have been used in hybridizing to date.

Flowers 8-26/flat to globose truss, campanulate, 90x90mm, with 5 wavy-edged lobes, buds green, opening inside light yellow (14D) with pale orange-yellow (19D) lobes; outside light yellow (12C) at base of tube, moderate yellowish pink (31C) at top of tube; pleasantly scented.
Leaves elliptic,130-190x50-80mm, cuneate to obtuse at base, acute to obtuse at apex, scaly.
Shrub 2.0x1.0m in 8 years. April-August (at least).
Syn: 'Gardenia' (Introduced to Australia, via Holland, pre-1988)

Leaves broadly elliptic to ovate,100x65mm, dark green, minutely scaly; new growth glaucous.

Flowers tubular funnel-shaped, 7/dome truss, with 5 wavy-edged lobes; corolla 85mm long x 25mm wide; tube 13mm wide at base. Colour deep yellowish pink (43C) margins inside and out; interior blending to brilliant yellow (11A) at base; and exterior blending into light yellow (11B) the entire length of the corolla; unmarked. Truss 125mm high x 150mm wide.
Leaves 100x65mm, elliptic, broadly acute apex, rounded base; semi-glossy and dark yellowish green (139A) above; no scales visible to naked eye.
Shrub 1.2m high x 0.9m wide in 5 years, intermediate habit. Dec-Jan.
