Hybrid List - Alphabetical

The links above correspond to alphabetical listings of named vireya rhododendron hybrids together with their parentages, where known. At the present time approximately 1000 named cultivars are listed, of which over 500 have been registered with the Royal Horticultural Society in London which is the International Cultivar Registration Authority (ICRA) for genus Rhododendron, including section Vireya. Registered varieties are denoted by an 'R' in the listings.

The remaining, unregistered, names have been assembled from a number of sources including, principally, nursery catalogues and vireya-related literature, newsletters and yearbooks. Highlighted cultivar names link to corresponding Gallery pages, which, in the case of Registered varieties, also display a copy of the Register entry in addition to the parentage and photographs. The parentage of a number of hybrids is not recorded - this information is still being sought and any assistance in this respect would be gratefully received.

In its role as ICRA, the RHS is responsible for maintaining the International Rhododendron Register, which contains background information, as supplied by the registrant, on each cultivar that has been submitted for inclusion in the Register. This usually details the parentage of the cross; flower and leaf shape, size and colour; height at maturity; along with the names of the person(s) involved in bringing the cross to fruition - all information which establishes the unique identity of that cultivar. A copy of the form 'Application for Registration of a Rhododendron Name' can be downloaded from the RHS website (pdf opens in new window). Registration of new varieties is free and is to be encouraged as the process provides a permanent record that can be accessed by all, as well as ensuring that any given name is used only once, thereby avoiding any potential confusion.

In addition to the International Rhododendron Registrar, Dr. Alan Leslie at the RHS, there are four National Registrars who are able to accept new registrations on his behalf in Australia, New Zealand, North America and Japan. Contact details are provided below:
